Christmas is just around the corner and I am so excited to share what’s within our preschool unit in this happiest and most colorful time of the year!  These activities are perfect for home and school setting.  They are designed for preschoolers and kindergartens specifically for kids ages 3 to 6 years old.

Christmas Present Measuring Activity

Explore the basic skill in learning how to measure the size of objects.  The lengths are in centimeters (cm) so I highly recommend that you use snap cubes, wooden cubes, unifix cubes, or a ruler (cm unit of measure).

This activity also reinforces sequencing and ordering of sizes: identify the biggest, smallest, longest, shortest Christmas present.  You can also ask your child or students to order the sizes of the presents (or snap cubes) from biggest to smallest or smallest to biggest.

Nativity Story Clipcards

I included the sequencing of the story of The Nativity (with a twist).  Here, the child is introduced to the concept of “ordinal numbers”,  another basic math concept that I often introduce around the preschool age.  It is very important that the child or student is introduced to the story at first.  There are a lot of child-friendly books about the story of Christmas or Nativity.  I have a few suggestions in this post here, Advent Books for Christmas Countdown.

I’ve been reading the Nativity story to the boys since they were young so they are already aware of Christ’s birth.  But sequencing the story seems quite a challenge.  Thus I added this activity to enhance reading comprehension and enrich their knowledge of the story behind Christmas.

Note:  For control of error, mark the correct order before presenting this activity to the child.  You can do it by adding stickers at the back of the cards to mark the answers or simply use a permanent marker.

Christmas Themed Ten Frames

Acquire basic counting skills with fun Christmas themed ten frames.  The set also comes in black & white version and one version with control which is perfect for younger children.  Vito here is using the colored blank version as he can count already.

I have a big collection of glass pebbles so we are using different colors here and Vito matches those colors to the ten frames.  Aside from these pebbles, you can also use any manipulatives like erasers, counters, etc.  You can also use playdough to form the number symbol in the ten frame mats.

Christmas Tree Color Sorting

My kids made these the other day and they were so beautiful!  I gave them choices on how they’re going to “cover” the dots, using stickers, counters, pompoms, or glass gems.  My eldest said it’ll be best if they use playdough.  Just look how cute these turned out!

Which One Doesn’t Belong?

Vito had so much fun playing this game.  It was his first time to experience an activity sorting out holiday icons so he loved the challenge.  The aim here is for the child to name the holiday symbols and identify which one doesn’t belong in the group.  The child will mark the answer with a wooden peg or a manipulative of his/her choice.

Christmas Lights Patterning

Oh this was fun!  Patterning is one of the foundation of math and it starts by giving the child opportunities to identify and create those patterns.  For our Christmas themed pack, we are using Christmas lights and colored wooden one-inch cubes.  You can use pompoms, glass gems, crayons, erasers or any manipulative available.

Christmas Themed Holly Number Representation

I love hollies so I used them for our number representation activity.

The child matches the count from the holly leaves to the number symbol in the berry.  They all looked so beautiful!

Christmas Themed Counting Activity

Use any manipulatives you want here, but again we used playdough.  The aim of the activity is to decorate your wreath and put the corresponding ornament count on it.  This was fun to assemble.  The kids loved decorating their wreaths and enjoyed putting different colors of playdoughs on it.  I just need to remind them not to get carried away and stick to the number count.
